Art Basel Hong Kong 2018
BMW Art Journey Shortlist

During Art Basel in Hong Kong, BMW revealed the three contenders for the prize

Three artists exhibiting in Discoveries, Art Basel’s sector dedicated to emerging art, have been shortlisted for the BMW Art Journey. Ali Kazim, Zac Langdon-Pole, and Gala Porras-Kim are the three contenders for the prestigious prize, which gives one artist the chance to go anywhere in the world to develop new work.

Kazim (Jhaveri Contemporary) was selected for his sculptures and series of paintings referring to desolate landscapes in Pakistan. Each work takes natural elements – sandstorms, lightning, clouds – as starting points, and is executed in a technique derived from miniature painting. Langdon-Pole (Michael Lett) was noticed for his series Passport (Argonauta) (2018), which fuses nautilus shells and meteorites into harmonious sculptures. Porras-Kim (Commonwealth and Council) works with artifacts and fragments of undisclosed origin. She investigates how objects within institutional collections undergo reinterpretation as the societal context changes.

The three artists have been invited to submit a proposal for their dream journey. The winner will be announced in early summer 2018.

The winning artist’s journey will be documented and shared with the public through publications as well as online and via social media.
