Critical Remarks on the National Question, et al.

Critical Remarks on the National Question is based around the installation that’s obvious! that’s right! that’s true! by artist collective et al., at the Christchurch Art Gallery in 2009. The publication expands upon issues of global colonisation, settlement and unauthorised outposts. Critical Remarks on the National Question is a compilation of 12 leaflets combined as a 200 page volume, and includes essays by Jan Bryant, Jennifer Hay and Jeremy Marshall.

This publication is also available as an edited edition book produced for the exhibition social solidarity #4: non-existent in the everyday world? by et al. at KalimanRawlins, Melbourne 2012. The artists have adapted their 2009 publication Critical Remarks on the National Question to reference and comment on British colonisation of Australia, subsequent land laws and aboriginal housing policies that were framed in the belief that the colony was being acquired by occupation (or settlement) of a terra nullius (land without owners). The publication includes plan drawings adapted from the State Government’s 1950’s Aboriginal ‘assimilation’ housing programme, and typology drawings by et al.
